New Collection of Essays Puts Focus on Politics, American Way of Life

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Where’s My Great Society?” by Jim Haas.

Olathe, KS (PRWEB) January 18, 2012

Give a Midwestern educator column space in a newspaper, and he gains a new audience to promote the power of learning through his often droll and sometimes caustic musings on a wide range of topics. Author Jim Haas has revised and polished this new collection of essays originally published in The Record newspaper in Kansas City, Kansas, from the 1980s to 2011. Writing with “the candor of Andy Rooney [and] a dash of Dave Barry,” Haas crafts a progressive critique of contemporary politics while celebrating a vision of government as a “people’s union” and reminding us of “what we can become if we get our act together.”

Where’s My Great Society? includes essays in nine categories, starting with “The Politics of We the People” and “The Way We Were,” and featuring “The Bush Years: Lest We Forget,” “The Obama Era,” and the healthcare debate. From comparing celebrity political candidates to action figures, to writing about the first atomic bomb, code-named Trinity, to promoting Read a Banned Book Week, Haas isn’t afraid to tackle tough subjects. On the other hand, he reminds us that life isn’t all about sobering issues with essays on the benefits of root beer, a dog who becomes part of a science fair, and the origins of jazz. The author pokes fun at himself, too, writing about staying busy after retirement: “Maybe I’ll write more of these columns. Maybe one of you will offer me a job so that I won’t.” Entertaining, informative, and thought provoking, Where’s My Great Society? serves as a snapshot of American life.

Haas, a Milken Foundation National Educator and National Humanities Scholar, writes a newspaper column about schooling that has expanded into broader social topics. A former Air Force officer, he taught history and was a school principal in Kansas City, Kansas. After retiring from public schools, he became director of a university master’s degree program for teachers. He and his wife, Kay, live in Olathe, Kansas.
