Awards Double-Whammy for Welsh Student

(PRWEB) July 17, 2005

PRWEB) July 17, 2005 — Richard, who is now enjoying his summer holiday after successfully completing his first year of a Software Engineering degree at Aberystwyth University, attended the ceremony at the school in Caldicot where he grew-up. As part of a team effort, Richard received both the Whitbread Award for Information Technology and the Midlands Bank Award for Business Education in front of students, teachers and parents from Caldicot Comprehensive.

Richard admits to being “absolutely passionate” about Business and Information Systems and is proud to be recognised in his hometown for his efforts. “These were my two favourite subjects and I’m obviously thrilled – and surprised – to come back home and win two Awards…I need to come home more often!”

The Awards event at Caldicot School is held annually to reward and recognise those students who have continued to excel in their subjects since leaving the secondary school.

Richard is currently working for Caldicot timber building firm Benfield ATT in a pivotal role, driving improvements to the company’s in-house Technical Information Systems. The role includes updating and digitising the company’s extensive Library, allowing staff, architects and customers easy access to thousands of important documents relating to the building of home extensions, houses, flats and public buildings.

“We applaud Richard’s efforts and congratulate him for winning both of these awards. We immediately recognised Richard’s potential and have already asked him to come back and help Benfield ATT, Caldicot whenever he returns home from University” commented Veronica Clarke, Head of Personnel at Benfield ATT.

“Richard was a very able and talented young man during his time at Caldicot School. He had an inquisitive and creative mind, which developed under the guidance and encouragement of the teaching staff. As a young Year 7 pupil he entered a National competition ‘It’’ll Never Work’ and won first prize for his walking suitcase. He won a computer and from this point his talent really developed. He was invaluable to the Computing Department and, along with another student, set up the School Website. He was involved in Business Studies, taking part in the UWCN Business Challenge. In his final year, his team came second out of 4500 teams in the National Proshare Competition, wining several thousand pounds for the school. He is now pursuing his degree course at Aberystwyth University where he won a scholarship award in recognition of his computing skills.”
